Description
Scientific Name: Pionus maximiliani Native Range: South America The Maximilian Pionus, also known as the Scaly-Headed Pionus, is a medium-sized parrot species within the family Psittacidae. It is characterized by predominantly green plumage with a darker, scalloped appearance on the head and neck, giving the species its common name. Blue and red accents may be present on the wings and tail, depending on the subspecies. Several subspecies of Pionus maximiliani are recognized, differing slightly in size and coloration. In the wild, this species inhabits forests, woodlands, savannas, and montane regions across central South America. They nest in tree cavities and are typically found in pairs or small groups. IUCN Conservation Status: Least Concern At Parrot Stars, we prioritize education, welfare, and responsible parrot ownership to help ensure every bird finds and thrives in a forever home. Before taking home any parrot, we provide comprehensive guidance on proper caging and setup, positive reinforcement training, household safety, nutrition, and enrichment. Parrots in captivity are still wild animals with all their natural instincts. Your overall success and experience with any species of companion parrot is greatly impacted by positive reinforcement training. A parrot’s behavior reflects both the environment they live in and the training they receive. All of our hand-fed babies are hatched and raised in our own breeding facility and weaned onto a diverse, high-variety diet. Our parrots are never clipped and are fully flighted.
